A sit down with - Dirk Fourie

WHO is influencing you right now?

I like to say the people who inspire me the most are long gone, I love history and it often speak more clearly to me than the present moment. I'm not sure if that's a good thing but that's the honest truth, I love it. There is a book called "Crooks like Us" by Peter Doyle, the book features photographs/mugshots taken in a few Central Sydney Prisons in the 1920's. Along with the images are some stories about how these folks ended up in prison, they are some of the best little stories and really opens your eyes to how some people in that time period thought and acted. It's just so bloody interesting and then the pictures themselves are amazing, all the guys are dressed in great suits and look like actual movie stars, this was just a result of how they dressed back then so in their mind it was normal but to me it's something else. The whole thing of being in a prison and also still looking like an accomplished/presentable individual is really a weird concept to me. It made me think even if our circumstances are dyer we can still do something to make it seem less so, I love that idea. It's a message of hope or something similar like that, it's beautiful to me.

WHAT is the next big thing you're excited about?

I’m excited to see my little family, I’ve been away for a couple of months working in Australia so the next big thing I’m excited about is spending some time with them. I’m also excited about this year as I think there will be many opportunities for those who can adapt and be creative in the ways they think. It’s a crazy time for us all and it’s super encouraging to see people fight through this terrible time in whatever way they can.

WHERE are you going next?

I don't want to avoid this question but I'm kinda going to avoid the questions. I'm trying really hard to live in the moment, it's been a challenge for me as my mind is always somewhere else. There's a lot to learn from life when you're fully present and I want to take advantage of that.
